Squirrel Entry Through Roof Vent – Ajax

Job Overview

Location: Ajax, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-story brick house with attached garage
Problem: Wildlife activity in attic consistent with squirrel presence
Service: Squirrel removal and full roofline exclusion
Visits: 2

Summary

Our team completed a two-visit squirrel removal and exclusion service at a detached home in Ajax after early morning attic activity was reported. Inspection confirmed roof-level entry through a damaged vent. Humane removal was completed using a one-way door system, followed by permanent sealing and full roof vent protection. A final visit confirmed resolution with no further activity.

Background / Property Context

The property is a two-story brick home with a complex roofline, multiple plastic roof vents, and soffit transitions. These features can be vulnerable to wildlife pressure if materials weaken over time or are left unprotected.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported repeated scratching and movement noises in the attic during early morning hours. Activity timing and location were consistent with squirrel behavior, prompting a professional inspection.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial exterior roof inspection, our technician identified a roof vent that had been heavily chewed through, creating a clear entry point into the attic space. Additional inspection identified a small opening along the soffit area. No interior inspection was required based on confirmed exterior access points and activity patterns.

Cause Analysis

Squirrels commonly target plastic roof vents due to their elevated position and relatively soft material. Once compromised, these vents provide direct access to attic spaces. Multiple unprotected vents on the roof increased the likelihood of repeat entry without comprehensive exclusion.

Treatment / Removal

A humane squirrel removal process was initiated. A one-way door was installed over the compromised roof vent to allow the animal to exit without re-entry. This approach ensured removal without trapping or harm.

Exclusion & Repairs

Following removal, permanent exclusion work was completed across the roofline:

  • The damaged roof vent was sealed after door removal
  • One foot of galvanized steel mesh was installed to close a soffit opening
  • Twelve plastic roof vents were reinforced with galvanized steel vent cages
  • One plastic wall vent was protected with a galvanized steel cage

All materials were mechanically fastened and sealed to withstand weather exposure and wildlife pressure.

Outcome & Confirmation

On the second visit, the homeowner reported no further attic activity. The one-way door was removed, all exclusion points were inspected, and no signs of re-entry were observed. The site was confirmed wildlife-free at completion.

Technician Notes

Grant conducted both visits, completing a full roof inspection, identifying the primary entry point, and overseeing installation and final exclusion verification.
